　　张老师，这是我上次日考中的一道改错题： 　　We just order them to do this or that, but hardly we are aware that we can do for them.
　　答案是�第二个that改为what，但是我觉得应在are aware后面加of，老师也说不清楚，您怎么看呢？
　　我同意你的看法，即应该�第二个that改成what并在aware后面加介词of，因为what从句本质上是一个名词短语，所以aware后边有of才能接what从句。这就类似于我们可以说“We were aware of the danger. (我们当时意识到有危险)”，而不能去掉of说成 “We were aware the danger.”这里的what从句充当介词of的宾语，是一个宾语从句。同时，what本身还在从句中充当从句谓语动词do的宾语。
　　值得注意的是，that引导的宾语从句不能用在介词后边，比如我们不能说“We were aware of that he was in danger.”而必须去掉of，直接�that从句接在形容词aware后边，说成“We were aware that he was in danger.”这也就解释了为什么英语中把用在某些形容词后边的that从句看作是一个宾语从句。
　　分析至此，上面的改错句子需要改写成：We just order them to do this or that, but hardly we are aware of what we can do for them.
　　即便如此修改，以上这个句子还是有错误。这里的hardly不是修饰主语we，而是修饰谓语部分are aware，应放于are和aware之间，或仍放于现在的位置，但其后的句子需部分倒装。整个句子可改为：
　　We just order them to do this or that, but we are hardly aware of what we can do for them.
　　或：We just order them to do this or that, but hardly are we aware of what we can do for them.
　　
　　张老师，下面这道题答案选B，有些同学说选C，翻译成“我们相信我们完全会赢，否则我们不会去”也说得通，您觉得呢？
　　We totally believed we ___________; otherwise we ___________.
　　A. would have succeeded; would not have gone
　　B. would succeed; would have gone
　　C. would succeed; would not have gone
　　D. would succeed; would not gone
　　满胜老师同意你同学的看法，应该选C，说成：We totally believed we would succeed; otherwise we would not have gone.
　　这句话可译为：“我们当时就完全相信我们会成功，要不然我们就不会去了。”这道题考查的内容，我称之为“跳层虚拟句”，其基本结构是：真实的陈述+ otherwise +虚拟的陈述。本题中，we totally believed we would succeed是对过去情形的真实陈述，注意这里would succeed用的不是虚拟语气，而是过去�来时，谈论的是过去真实的情况。Otherwise之后的部分谈论的是对过去情况的虚拟，所以应用表对过去虚拟的would have done形式。本题题干还可以改写成if条件虚拟句：
　　If we had not totally believed we would succeed, we would not have gone.
