This phrase comes from the sentence mean- ing that “in the wondrous places with excellent people, the noble named Chen Fan treated the scholar Xu Ru with courtesy by inviting him to share the same seat”. The sentence is a part of the famous “Prequel to Tengwang Pavilion”written by the famous poet Wang Bo in the Tang Dynasty.
The story behind this article happened on the Double-Nine Day, i.e., the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, in the year of 663 AD, when the Magistrate Yan in Hongzhou held a banquet to fete celebrities at that time in the newly-built Tengwang Pavilion. Local famous scholars all came here upon invitation.
Wang Bo just walked past this place and was invited too. Though he was a poet with certain fame, he was still 14 years old at that time. So he was given a seat at the corner of the room, which was very inconspicuous.
Magistrate Yan’s son-in-law was very good at composing articles and Magistrate Yan asked him to write an article before the banquet so that he could brag about his literal talents of his son-in-law.
When the banquet came to its halfway, Magistrate Yan stood up and said: “Today the scholars from Hongzhou assembled in Tengwang Pavilion. We must compose an article to memorize this event. All of you here are the men of letters. Please write an ode as the prequel to the event which could be as famous as Tengwang Pavilion.” After that, the servants placed brushes and ink stones in front of the guests.
But the scholars refused to write an article and passed down the brushes and stones to people next to them. When the tools were passed to Wang Bo, he took them and began to think of how to write. Soon he raised the brush and began to write the ode on the paper. Magistrate Yan was unpleased to see a young man taking the task. He went out of the hall to watch the scenes of the river against the railings before ordering the servants to copy what Wang Bo wrote for him.
A moment later, the servant delivered him the starting sentences of Wang Wei’s article, which meant“the place where Tengwang Pavilion was located was previously administrated by Nanchang but now it belonged to the Hongzhou government. Two auspicious stars are shining in the sky above this place, which is connected to Heng Mountain and Lu Mountain”.
Magistrate Yan was not impressed by the beginning and thought it was so ordinary that everybody could make them. However, when the servants delivered the next two sentences, meaning that “the place has three rivers as clothes and five lakes as the belts while controlling over the vast place of Chu in the south and linking to the fertile land in the east”. Magistrate Yan was surprised to see this, thinking it incredible for a young man to write such powerful and impressive sentences.
The two later sentenced shocked Magistrate Yan even more. “Things have their own essences and the heaven hides its gems. The light of Longqun Sword directly shoots the space between two stars.” That implied that there were rare gems in Hongzhou. The following sentence was where the phrase came from, meaning that great talents could be found in Hongzhou.
Magistrate Yan was very pleased to see the article and admired Wang Bo very much. He did not show off the article of his son-in-law. Instead, he invited Wang Bo to his seat after he completed the whole ode. Then he said to him: “You are such a great man of letter of our time.” He rearranged the seat and let Wang Bo sit next to him, showing his respect to the latter.
