In the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), the Sage Confucius went out one day. He heard someone crying sadly on his way and urged his carter, saying “hurry up, hurry up. There might be sages ahead.”
When they approached the crying man, Confucius found that he was Gao Yu, a known scholar at that time.
Confucius got of his wagon and said to Gao Yu:“Why are you crying so sadly? You have bereavement at home?”
Gao Yu answered: “I had made three mistakes. When I was young, I traveled in different states to study and did not place taking care of my families above everything else. This is my first mistake. When I finished my study, I did not show enough filial respect to my parents because I wanted to serve the king to fulfill my dream. This is my second mistake. I have had good relationship with my friends but get alienated from my relatives. This is my third mistake. The tree wants to stop but the wind never stops. When children want to provide a good life for their parents, they have already gone. It is the time that cannot be retrieved and you cannot see relatives that have passed away. Please allow me to die to accompany my relatives.” After saying that, he passed away out of sadness.
Later Confucius said to his disciples: “You should learn a lesson from Gao Yu’s case. I think this is enough for you to understand the implication.” After hearing this, many of his disciples went back home to look after their parents.
