The Shanghai government fully promoted the construction of “Smarter City” to make ordinary people enjoy a more convenient and intelligent living style. The plan of Metro Optical Network (MONET), which is being implemented by China Telecom Shanghai, enables residents in Shanghai to be the first people in China to enjoy the amazing speed brought by the fiber-optical network.
“Actively promote the construction of Smarter City to make information technology provide better support and service for the citizens,” Shanghai’s mayor Han Zheng said in the Government Work Report.
   My Expectations Years Ago
Speaker: Xu Weimin (Director of the Shanghai Skin Hospital)
It has been the fifth year since I moved to the Shanghai Skin Hospital. I am already over 50 years old. Some old things flashed back in my mind –what I went through years ago became old memories and what I expected also came true.
E-Surfing Rescue at the Tense Moment: when I initially became the director, many administrative affairs piled in front of me. The most troublesome thing was that the busy intranet of the hospital blocked my submission of the Year-end Report to the Shanghai Health Administration Bureau. But things seemed to be changed at the end of 2011 – the workers in the administration office looked very calm. I saw the office director input the finished report to his mobile phone under the instruction of a technician.
“Is it OK? How can such a small mobile phone store this big file?” I wondered. “Yes. Actually it is not related with the size of the mobile phone. The RAM and uploading speed are functional factors. You only need to input the email address of the Health Bureau and send the email directly.” Soon, the screen of the mobile phone showed that the mail had been sent. It was the power of the E-Surfing 3G mobile phone.
E-Surfing Pattern of Wonderful Life. Mr. Zhang from the hospital’s General Facility Department is a quickminded and hard-working young man. His out-of-work life is more wonderful– the UEFA Champions League at midnight and the NBA games at noon – he should rest at this time. Mr. Zhang told me about his limitless vigor. “Actually I do not have so much energy to watch the football games at night. I usually watch the replay of most wonderful scenes when I go to work by subway. My E-Surfing 3G mobile phone is so wonderful that watching the replay via it is just like watching TV. Of course, I use it to watch NBA at noon.”
E-Surfing Emissary Connecting People. December 1, 2011 was the World AIDS Day. Our hospital built a stage for performance in the Changshou Park to spread the knowledge of fighting against the AIDS. Ms. Wang correctly answered the question about the three methods of spreading HIV on the site. She also used her mobile phone to take pictures of our publicity materials and videos of our performance. She told me that she would put these materials in the bulletin board of her community to teach people about the correct way of preventing the AIDS. I noticed that her mobile phone had the same logo of E-Surfing as mine. I used to dream of letting more people know about preventing AIDS. Now this could be easily realized through the E-Surfing 3G mobile phone.
In that case, we should accelerate the use of 3G mobile Internet to send the MMS-based mobile newspaper of our hospital as soon as possible, making more hot issues known to people. We expect the E-Surfing 3G to pick up a new steam engine in the Year of Dragon.
   High-speed MONET Brings
Superexcellent Experiences Speaker: Wang Haosen (student of the Electronic Information Engineering Department of Shanghai Maritime University)
I have been studying in the Shanghai Maritime University for two and a half years. As a student, I fully experienced the changes the MONET brought to us. For example, the long queue waiting to buy network cards in the campus was gone; instead, students pay their Internet fees online. Gradually, we found that the Internet speed increases while the price drops – “the higher speed with lower price and the binding brings bigger benefits. So wonderful!”
The FINA World Championships was held in Shanghai last July. During the event I served as a volunteer and fortunately experienced the “Information-based FINA World Championships”. Out of the venues the vehicles for guaranteeing communications with bullhead printed on the vehicle body assisted in keeping the communication stable and fluent. The Opening Ceremony was presented to 3.5 billion audience in five continents via MONET. Inside the venues, the WiFi signal covered the whole area. In the rest area for the athletes in the basement of the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, athletes and coaches could use their pad computers to watch the live broadcasting of games via WiFi connection. A foreign female coach asked me about the scenic spots in Shanghai. I made detailed introduction through wireless network for her. With WiFi, foreigners enjoyed themselves in Shanghai!
Last October, I was given the opportunity to join in the training program of “Sustainable Business Start” held by the United Nations and Deutsch Telekom. On the last day of the training course, Prof. Liu Fuqiang from Tongji University introduced us about the Internet of Cars. I raised my question about the network delay – in my dormitory, when my roommates and I play the same online game, the delay of connecting to broadband is usually 30 milliseconds. However, if we use China Mobile’s wireless net for campus, the delay should last at least 100 milliseconds. Sometimes the network is completely disconnected after 1 second of delay.
Similarly, if the delay of the communication network for autos exceeds a certain amount, the communication between cars, or even the automatic driving, seems to be nonsense. But when we install China Telecom’s Chinanet wireless network in my dormitory, the delay is also controlled within 30 milliseconds. I remember Prof. Liu mentioned that there was a standard for the network communication for autos in the United States which could control the delay within 50 milliseconds. So, if the high-speed wireless network like Chinanet can be available in the whole city via fiber-optical network, not only the communications between cars can be realized; the traffic lights in the roads are no longer necessary and the cars can be automatically and safely driven. What a wonderful life it is!
All these depend on the form in the communication field – the construction of MONET. I believe that the improvement of MONET can provide us with more stable and safer network. I expect the advent of that day. What about you?
