Mary in 1)Armani Michelle Dockery is sitting in an 2)overthe-top hotel restaurant in the Hampshire countryside, so chosen for its 3)proximity to Highclere Castle—where Downton Abbey is filmed.
She sips a glass of red wine and muses on the endless 4)imbibing of the 5)aristocratic Crawley family, “Sometimes during filming I’ll think: ‘No, I’m not going to have a brandy because I just finished my glass of wine at the table.’” After all, how is Mary supposed to be 6)imperious when she’s 7)inebriated? “Exactly!”
As might be expected by anyone in modern society there is not a whole lot of Lady Mary in Dockery, who plays the 8)haughty heroine of the obsessed-over period drama. She does have a superb speaking voice and a posture that would make a mother proud.
Dockery, 30, and following a few years spent in television dramas, was cast in Downton after her winning turn as Eliza Doolittle in 9)Pygmalion on London’s West End.
“Until then I’d played much more vulnerable parts, but I remember coming out of the audition, and Dan Stevens was in the waiting room. I said, ‘Who are you up for?’ and he said, “Matthew.” She laughs, “I walked out and thought, ‘Oh that could work.’”
She is often asked why she believes Downton is so celebrated, especially in the U.S. “I think some period drama can be quite alienating, but Downton isn’t,” she says. “This is going to sound quite, um, pretentious, but someone said that it’s like a soap written by a poet.” She’s right. The writing, by Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes, and the 10)cinematography are so elegant that Downton’s 11)campier qualities (the dreamy Turk dying in 12)flagrante delicto; the noble 13)valet Bates in jail for murder; Lady Sybil running off with the 14)chauffeur) wash right over you.
“I used to get quite defensive of people saying it’s soaplike”, she says, “but it kind of is.”
She had finished Downton’s third season, which premiered in the U.S. in January. Before that Dockery will appear on the big screen in Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley in November, and in the fall she begins filming Restless, a TV adaptation of the 15)William Boyd novel.

Dockery thinks Mary would be very modern if she lived today. “She’d be in charge, her own boss. She’d have married very well and maybe had kids, but I don’t think she’d be particularly maternal.”She laughs, “She’d definitely have help.” As for modern Mary’s style: “Armani: simple, clean.”

  Lady of Essex
While Lady Mary Crawley was born into a 16)pampered life of privilege and wealth, Essex girl Michelle comes from infinitely humbler beginnings.
The daughter of an Irish truck driver turned surveyor and a mother who delivers meals on wheels, she grew up in the unremarkable suburb of Chadwell Heath in Essex. The youngest of three girls, Michelle had her first taste of acting at the tender, young age of five.
“I think my parents knew before I did that I was going to be an actress because I was 17)doing impressions of Margaret Thatcher at the age of four,” she has said.
A year later, she was attending the Finch Stage School, then based at the bottom of her street in St. Chad’s church hall.
She remained there for more than 10 years, often working after-school and weekend jobs to pay her way, including a 18)stint as a waitress in a pie and mash shop. Her dad insisted she and her two sisters work for their pocket money and the cash helped pay for drama lessons. “I knew very young, early on that that was what I wanted to do. I wasn’t an academic. I hated maths and science at school. I couldn’t concentrate,” she recalls.
But it was a three-week stint at the National Youth Theatre that really went on to 19)cement her ambition to become an actress.
“I walked in and it was like winning the lottery; I knew this was what I wanted to do,”she said.
She took a year off to 20)save up—working in a newspaper recruitment office—to fund her way through a three-year degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. On graduating, Michelle joined the prestigious National Theatre on London’s South Bank.
“I spent 18 months there, doing what was very much like an apprenticeship. I started as an understudy and 21)worked my way up,” she says.
She made her professional debut in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, but in 2008, she landed the plum role of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, during which she was seen by a Downton producer.
She was praised by the critics and earned herself a Best Newcomer award, but almost immediately afterwards was 22)slated for her performance as Ophelia to John Simm’s Hamlet at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre.

“One review was so awful that I thought it was 23)indelibly etched on my soul, but now I can’t actually recall a word—I’ve erased it from my memory in an act of 24)self-preservation,”she said.
Away from the cameras, Michelle isn’t giving much away. Her best friend is mum-oftwo Simone Coombs, who she met at school when she was five. The pair can get through nine cups of tea during a 25)mammoth gossip session.
“It brings me straight back down to earth and ensures that I never become lost in the celebrity side of things.”
Refreshingly down-to-earth Michelle has revealed how the whole cast occasionally bursts into a 26)rendition of the 27)Petula Clark hit“Downtown”—and it’s clear it’s things like that which make her utterly dedicated to her trade.
“That’s why I love acting, because you tap into parts of yourself that you wouldn’t necessarily need to in real life. I’m quite surprised at how out of control I can be on stage, because actually I find I like to be in control in life. It’s quite freeing, really.”
Acting is all she has ever wanted to do and her global success hasn’t changed a thing.
“I just want a really varied career and to keep going”, she said, “This is it until I can’t walk any more or until I start forgetting my lines.” Unlike Lady Mary, it looks as if Michelle Dockery is going to get exactly what she wants.
